picasso's gertrude stein
ms. stein was a remarkable individual. she came from america and settled in paris where she lived for forty years with alice b. toklas. all the painters and writers of the day were glad to be invited into her salon. as her art collection grew, so did the fame of many painters, including gauguin, gris, and matisse. it was pablo picasso who painted her portrait. When someone commented that Stein did not look like her portrait, Picasso replied, "She will."
some interesting gertrude quotes:
Americans are very friendly and very suspicious, that is what Americans are and that is what always upsets the foreigner, who deals with them, they are so friendly how can they be so suspicious they are so suspicious how can they be so friendly but they just are.
An audience is always warming but it must never be necessary to your work.
You are all a lost generation.
