paul bowles 1910-1999
from queens to tangier, this man blazed such a beautifully spooky trail. his music, stories, novels and life are a bona fide cult. once you discover his writing, your understanding of the world will no longer be quite as it was. for over fifty years till his death he lived and breathed and communicated life in morocco. his short stories are the best i have ever read.
i have not seen director bertolucci's film version of paul's best selling 1949 novel, 'the sheltering sky' as i wished to leave the impression this book left on me alone. soon there will be a film adaptation of his novel, 'the spider's house.' although this man was unwilling to give anything he wrote a happy ending, his view and style are unparalleled. life in morocco never seemed to have changed for him. on the floor, pipe in hand, surrounded by admirers.
