see venice

there comes a time in many lives when a book or film has such a profound effect that it alters one's consciousness. it may be spiritual or it may be artistic. in the best cases it is both.
in italy, where children sip wine like water, director, luchino visconti, was surely sipping the juice of the gods. his ability to bring beauty to it's highest platform is unsurpassed.
when he made, 'DEATH IN VENICE' in 1971, he was 65 years old, making him a perfect candidate to capture the story of a older man's desires to reconnect with the beauty of youth.
this film, based on the novella by thomas mann, is lavishly exquisite. at the same time, the director's innate good taste prevents any display of excess. the setting is simply a beautiful hotel for wealthy patrons to spend a little time by the sea.
the lead character is a musician and the music in this film is very moving. dirk bogarde, as the composer in need of a rest, knew he was playing the role of a lifetime. considering that he made so many excellent films, that is recommendation enough.
