alfred hitchcock's 'spellbound' was only the fourth film in gregory peck's movie career. no one defined tall, dark, and handsome like this actor. he exuded strength and integrity and it's interesting to watch him play a thoroughly vulnerable victim who cannot remember his past. on a quest to find his way back to his real identity, he has the nerve to traipse right into a clinic, posing as a doctor of psychology!
working at the clinic is a serious, even prim, woman played by ingrid bergman. the patients here are truly troubled, including a sexy 'psycho tuna'* who bites her doctor's hand. alfred had a field day with a subject that was being newly explored at the time. weaving it's freaky way through the love story that develops between ingrid and her amnesiac are dream sequences, masterly designed by the genius painter dali.
among all the creative forces coming together is the thrill of watching tall, dark and handsome snapping at his beautiful nurse. ingrid bergman played a character that actually enters her patient's room in the middle of the night. this movie is ahead of it's time in more ways than enlisting salvador.
