THE MIND BENDERS, 1962. in this odd yet captivating film dirk bogarde (who years later played the role of a lifetime in 'death in venice') plays a handsome and happily married scientist. in an attempt to solve a crime, he undergoes brainwashing techniques that include being submerged in a tank of water for many hours. his mind slowly unravels, and so does his loving relationship to his wife played by mary ure. as in 'look back in anger', her character seems to exist just a bit off the ground, yet the delicacy inherent in her performance never diminishes our experience as we witness her struggle. in both films she truly exudes faith.
the title of this film was the inspiration for the band name 'the mindbenders', a british invasion group who had a huge hit with the song, 'groovy kind of love.'
