'darling, mysteries come and go...
...but love remains the best kept secret in town.' lyrics by tom verlaine (illustration by pal shazar) from his song, 'always.' a lesson learned the hard way by diana scott, the 'darling' of my favorite julie christie film. julie, free spirited icon of the swinging sixties london scene who accepted her academy award for starring in this 1965 film wearing a mini dress. as diana, she dukes it out with every man she knows and just cannot understand why the tears are streaming down her indescribable face. in this story of one young woman's desire to have it all, dirk bogarde's character leaves his wife and children to move in with diana only to be calling her a whore shortly after. i do not believe that a sense of her own beauty is what allows julie christie to twist herself up into such knots for us all to see. i think she is simply a great actress who is willing to give the finest performance she can.
