most of john osborne's play 'look back in anger' takes place in a small top floor apartment. burton's 'jimmy' and claire's 'alison' share their flat/battleground with housemate/best friend 'cliff.' cliff is a truly devoted referee who is more than willing to do whatever it takes to keep the peace. his bed is in what can be described as a boxroom. the actor gary raymond who plays 'cliff' has all the qualities that i find disarming. he is tall, dark, bony and boyish. he never gets angry. jimmy rips the covers off his sleeping body, jimmy verbally abuses allison, jimmy locks him out. cliff never gets angry.
