in 1935 josef von sternberg adapted the great russian novel into a film. peter lorre starred as 'raskolnikov' and marian marsh starred as 'sonya.' this movie is not easy to find but not impossible. the delicacy of the two principal players turns their empty stomachs, threadbare clothing and unfortunate circumstances into a poem. his crime, her faith, their young expressive faces.... i love it.

Mr. Lorre, a rare fragile porcelain picture. It erases the image of large bungle eyes and sing-sing voice of many of his characters.
He looks misunderstood but yet confident.
