1938's PYGMALION

in time this title was changed to 'my fair lady' but george bernard shaw was fortunate enough to see his delightful play's first film version released under the name by which it was christened, PYGMALION. shaw was also afforded the luxury of choosing the actress who would bring one of literatures most colorful characters, eliza doolittle, to the screen. enter wendy hiller.
wendy hiller has more than just her acting talent in common with ingrid bergman. both women were also quite tall. once wendy's 'eliza' works her way up from the flower market to a tiara she is positively regal.
leslie howard's, 'enry iggins' is condescending, cruel, carefree and eventually conquered. there will always be an actress who wishes to portray miss dolittle. if wendy hiller's performance doesn't scare them off perhaps it will prove to be enlightening.
