viva la liberte!

eugene delacroix painted 'liberty leading the people' in 1830. it is amazing. in 1818, theodore gericault, at the young age of 27 years, painted 'raft of the medusa.' then, in 1985 along comes 'rum sodomy and the lash', one of the great records from the english/irish group 'the pogues.' all of these images seem to have been born from the same spirit.

i can smell the smoke, taste the salty mist, and feel the breeze wafting forward in all three paintings. can you imagine the conditions these paintings went through? no electricity, painted by daylight and candles. amazing products from unimaginable archaic times.
