subtle and so sad

one of france's most admired actresses, sandrine bonnaire, co-starred with michel blanc in this very special film. dozens of adaptations of george simenon books have been brought to the screen. his 'inspector maigret' is a household name around the world. from what i have seen, his books inspire works that are both tender, tragic, and always mysterious.
1989's 'monsieur hire' left me speechless. it is intimate and the pathos is unforgettable. sandrine is a wonderful and beautiful actress. the relationship between her character and the title character is very rare and touching.
this story is a lesson in compassion.
