between 1944 and 2005 swedish filmmaker ingmar bergman made many beloved, serious movies. my first experience with his aesthetic was seeing 'persona' in a movie theatre and walking out feeling very grateful that i did not have to wash my face in the dead of winter at an outdoor pump. i was also glad that his muse, actress liv ullman, was embraced internationally.
woody allen paid a lovely tribute to this master in his own film, 'interiors.' even if bergman is known for being grim, brilliant, and a great inspiration, just look at how exquisite his hands were.
