the two misguided macho idiots, beautifully played by clark gable and eli wallach in 'the misfits' made a living by catching and selling wild horses, often termed "misfits" because they are too small for riding. doing their low level best to impress marilyn monroe's sweet, sincere, and messed up girl/woman, they eventually stumble upon the new notion of allowing wild things to run free.
i will never understand playwright arthur miller's generosity in creating this deeply unpleasant play for his then wife, marilyn, to star in. story aside, the acting was great, so great in fact that i only ever thought the title applied to the lead characters.
