vermeer was the master of pestle and mortar for grinding natural organic pigments for his palette of oils and the 'girl with the pearl earring' was the proof!! so renaissance for the 1600's.
Not only do I know nothing about art, I'm not even sure I know what I like. Having said that, my reaction to this is: WOW--beautiful and striking at the same time. The rendering is so lifelike it might as well be a photograph. Extremely well done, vermeer.
