no 'last tango' but still....
if anyone has the right to trespass on the sacred ground that is 'last tango in paris' it is the film's director bernardo bertolucci. his 1972 master stoke using the most glorious colors to jump off the palette which paints the masterpiece that is paris itself was not the end of his fascination with large empty rooms and unlikely lovers. in 1998 he directed 'besieged' with actors david thewlis and thandie newton. thewlis is amazingly convincing as a musician doing his best to not face up to the fact that his stunning maid, who is living for her husband to be released from jail in africa, is interferring with his composing. as the serious housekeeper who studies, cleans, and prays for justice, thandie newton is perhaps the most beautiful woman bernardo met since 'tango's' maria schneider. with much tenderness the tale of each characters plight is told.
