forever relevant
for years director joseph losey has been sitting pretty on the top of my list of favorite filmmakers, thanks to films like 'the servant' and 'the go-between.' little did i know (till today) that he directed another movie i have long admired: 'the boy with the green hair.' this movie is a perfect way to introduce actor dean stockwell into this blog.
dean has made a zillion films. as a talented and precious little boy he had buckets of charm and curiosity. 'the boy with the green hair' was made in 1948 when the misery of war was much too close to be ignored. tons of ww2 war movies invaded the consciousness of cinema goers but this offering is very unique and just as chilling as the more 'realistic' stories. little 'peter' wakes up with punk hair long before it was cool and must deal with the consequences. symbolism, sincerity, and orphans mysteriously living in the woods made me love this film as a child.

dean stockwell, groomed 'stock' from california, 1940's. kid prodigy of film!! kept his head above water with each decade of work. mr. stockwell, developed and developed, without derailment. he survived the perils of child actor to actor and kept himself safe from self-destruction. 'a quantum leap' for child stars to adults. relatively speaking.
