flower power

'la dame aux camelias' is a novel written in 1848 by alexandre dumas. based on the life of a real parisienne, the courtesan marie du plessis, director george cukor's incredibly lovely film version came out in 1936. starring greta garbo in role of marguerite, robert taylor as her lover armand, and lionel barrymore as his dad, i can watch this film over and over. the brilliant dress designer adrian did the costumes which are amazing. joy and sorrow reached an absolute peak in this tale of an impossible love.
when armand's father begs marguerite to give up his son he says, 'tell him you don't love him.'
she pleads, 'he won't believe me.' her plight is very sad but her gowns are to die for.

watched 'the mysterious lady' last night and ms. garbo sure can put herself in a pickle when averting impossible love when following the commands from the "powers that be" to stay objective and follow the course of action to further the cause. the cost of duty and happiness makes one sad for this beautiful pawn of solitude and sacrifice.
its only a movie i know, but wow! she can produce a tear for her choices.
