hypnotic
no one cast a spell like montgomery clift. the intensity of the stillness this actor demonstrates is remarkable. i imagine many actors have wished to command a performance like he did. cowboy, factory worker, priest... always the same stunned pale blue haze of his eyes.
a best friend of elizabeth taylor, a sad victim of a car accident which altered his mind and looks, a severe dependance on prescription drugs, montgomery died at 44. his films are treasures simply for the sight of a great actor whose every character appears to be teetering on the line between sanity and the other thing.
my favorites are: 'a place in the sun' and 'the heiress.' 'indiscretion of an american wife' starring montgomery is the film the 'grape' family is watching in 'what's eating gilbert grape.' only 17 films but what a legacy.

its so sad that artist are so sensitive and have an inferior complex that develops and cripples their credibility. when things change in their perceived persona, how strong the addiction affiliation becomes. monty and james are perfect examples.
