two steps back

usually you don't get to see just when a sociopath's behavior takes root. here you do. you get to watch a young girl take the life of her guardian/aunt. when she clobbers her in the head with a candlestick it looks as if the object did not even make contact with the subject. however, we know.
barbara stanwyck's 'martha' in 'the strange love of martha ivers', is a megalomaniac with a weak husband and a secret. no matter what she tells the guy who strolls back into her life from her dark past, it is hard to feel sympathy, but it's really fun to see the struggle between one wrong and another in a life that contains no such thing as 'right.'
van heflin brings a sense of sanity to the screen as the returning childhood friend, observing the perverse co-habitation of two people he forgot about years ago. in the end, as a shot rings out, he turns around as if knowing it could end no other way.
lizabeth scott is hurt and sweet as the innocent. this was the first film for kirk douglas.
