dream team

it seems like bette davis and miriam hopkins made tons of films together, and not just two. they are so suited. i know for sure that miriam did her best to steal scenes from bette. i have a feeling bette could care less. when bette stands you feel the floor is sinking. when she walks, the room moves.
i just read the edith wharton novella, 'the old maid' and recognized right away that it was the story the film was based on.
'the old maid' was about 35! she couldn't tell her daughter that she was her mother! she lived with her in the home of a cousin who adopted her so as to give her a name! tina never knew that 'poor aunt charlotte' was her mom!
turn the clock back and you have a really moving and realistic scenario of people at the mercy of society. bette and miriam are great.

dirty blondes always beat out a true blonde...

whether its the salem witch trials or the unexplained "old maid" stigma does not allow or explain choices that don't jive with a brainwashed society. Great film.
