how to grab the sympathy of an audience in three easy steps:
1. cast the skinnier than everyone else sinatra to play an out of work musician with a heroin addiction.
2. cast the stunning kim novack to be the sweetheart he can't marry cause he's guilted into sticking to his wife.
3. cast the excellent eleanor parker as the wife who blames her husband for putting her in a wheelchair for life.
for extra measure throw in a crummy drug dealer, a misfit/buddy who steals dogs and 'redyes' their fur so as to sell them, and director otto preminger.
'the man with the golden arm' is an enjoyable and important movie, even if you have to watch frank blow an audition cause he is too strung out to play. everyone is amazing and believe it or not, there is a big surprise ending.
