translation: in a grove

akira kurosawa is a movie making giant, aside from being six feet tall. he is honored all over the world, film after film. in 1950 he successfully entered the western consciousness with 'rashomon.'
like many great films, 'rashomon' was based on a short story. it amazes me how epic these tales become in the hands of genius filmmakers. it is said that every picture tells a story. this film twists that saying into every story tells a picture.
the actor toshiro mifune is many things to many people. i learned about him from a guy i was living with in london, who took me day after day to see the mifune film festival in hampstead. at first i was all, 'what? japanese cinema? will i get it?' it was fantastic and i fell for toshiro like my guy knew i would. toshiro is handsome, intense, brilliant, and very very funny. how i would love to see johnny depp take on the role of his 'bandit' in 'rashomon.' once you discover mifune, you will be hooked.
this film is beautiful in every respect. the story/stories are clear yet complex, the acting is poetic and wild.
