for an actor with extraterrestrially blue eyes, paul newman made such down to earth films. i totally relate to his liking to wear blue jeans instead of fancy dress.'hud' may have been the movie that introduced me to his co-star patricia neal. i could watch her everyday, she is such a perfect combination of high/low. it isn't as if she looks like she swears but you know she wouldn't mind if someone else did. maybe she'd just sigh and slip out of the room.
she and newman are really good together. although she plays a domestic in the home of a ranch family, you get the feeling she is sort of slumming. paul's taunting of her, his insolence and desire for her is beautifully controlled by her invisible wand. eventually she offers him a chance but he is just unable to rise above where his head/lifestyle is at.
i don't enjoy films with cattle but the acting is wonderful in this unhappy father/son drama.
brandon de wilde as the moral thread is super.
