ingmar bergman took a very upsetting story and created a special film. there is so much purity and it's opposite in 'THE VIRGIN SPRING' that a true balance is achieved. life and death, sisters and sex, the same themes explored by woody allen, one of bergman's great champions, are dealt with in this relatively early film in the long career of bergman.
the soul, of a young girl who has been left lying alone on the ground after being raped and killed, is far removed from the terrible event that must somehow be dealt with by her family. the need for revenge flows through her father's veins like a spring that flows beneath the ground, awaiting it's chance to surface. max von sydow stars as the religious father forced to deal with his hatred. this film remains shockingly relevant.

Max's films leave me bedazzled. "Steppenwolf" was intriguing and made me realize that there is a huge gap between my western culture views and european culture's in regards to cinema.
the virgin spring and titus andronicus are films that explore the taboo of revenge for vile acts done to justify personal persecution.
