one day i walked into my favorite restaurant and got a very pleasant shock. sitting alone was an actress i recognized from the film, 'petulia.' i could not recall her name, but i sincerely told her how good she was in the movie. i remember exactly what she said. 'yes, that was a strange film.'
richard lester, who directed 'petulia', directed both the beatles films. he must have been a truly colorful man to know. i suppose when i first saw this movie i might have found it strange too, but behind the quick edits, the jumps from present to past, is a very simple story.
julie christie plays a free spirited young woman who married 'the most beautiful thing' she ever saw, played by richard chamberlain. one problem, behind her husband's handsome face is the mind of a real psycho tuna. (that's what i call my dog who totally freaks out when someone knocks on the door.)
parties, personalities, pretty vistas and broken bones fall into the hands of a director who knew how to build them all up into a whole.
george c. scott joins the beautiful people in a very hip film.
