the main event

i wonder if any of my relatives stood on the sidewalk outside of grauman's chinese theatre on hollywood blvd. for the premiere of 'grand hotel.' i know garbo did not attend.
never before had so many stars come together to make one film. all of them were doubtful but took the leap into making the timelessly enjoyable smash sensation of 1932.
greta garbo plays the ballerina who, in one night, contemplates suicide before falling madly in love. john barrymore plays the desperate hotel thief who, in one night, steals garbo's pearls and makes love to her before handing the pearls back. joan crawford plays a stunning stenographer who, in one night, agrees to 'be nice' to a crooked businessman before opting for a better life. lionel barrymore plays the provincial clerk out for one luxurious experience before giving up the ghost.
every character is touching and the performances will shine for all time.
