the tragedy of 'tristan and isolde' was the inspiration for jean cocteau's screenplay for 'l' eternal retour' (translated 'the eternal return') and there is so much to enjoy in his modern retelling of it. the characters surrounding the lovers are remarkable. vanity and nastiness abound in the lives of those who are jealous of the poetic young man who falls in love with his uncle's young wife.
jean cocteau did not direct this film but it has his mark all over it. the actor who plays 'patrice', is jean marais, the partner of cocteau in life and work. throughout the film we are blessed with the loving friendsip he has with his dog, molouk.
perhaps this film is less theatrical than if cocteau were directing, but it is still very magical and inspiring.
