introducing ingrid

after making six films in her native sweden, actress ingrid bergman's english speaking career was launched. in 1939 she made 'intermezzo' with the truly divine actor leslie howard.
once again, the story is simple. leslie is a happily married musician with two loving children and one cute dog. he returns from a long tour to find himself falling in love with his daughter's piano teacher. not only can she play the heck out of the most difficult pieces, but she is as beautiful as a calla lilly.
ingrid bergman is timeless, thanks to the studios understanding of her natural beauty. as she is very tall, she wears flats and long dresses, making her appear as if she just stepped out of a very chic magazine. leslie howard conveys adoration kind of like how mick jagger sings it. just great.

why are those cute wiry terriers of b/w classics (notably asta) and this cutie patootie guy (above) and FDR's scottish terrier, and of course Nipper (RCA) icon have such an indelible mark on this genre of history?
