good/bad cop

'where are sidewalk ends' is such an evocative title. for me, really satisfying 'film noir' is like a well balanced meal. protein, starch, etc. film noir really works when it has equal parts: atmospheric black and white, loose morals, snappy dialogue, and characters who seriously draw the line, no matter which side of the law.
the great noir men tend to be self righteous and more than able to knock someone's block off. the toughest of the noir guys don't think twice about slapping a woman. it is most important, when playing a 'bad girl' in a noir film, to have a perfect sense of timing when responding to a resounding smack on the cheek, as in 'you'll take it and like it.'
dana andrews is tailor made in this film about a very uptight policeman seeking to live down his father's past. gene tierney co stars as the patient and understanding piece of his puzzle.
