movies are a sure fire way to suspend belief. films based on real people are often full of untruths, but we believe them while watching.
'the story' of painter vermeer's most famous painting was turned into a popular book before it came to the screen. vermeer's work of art is very beautiful and i can see how it got a writer's imagination going. i think the casting of the film was really nice and the visual impact of the film is beautiful.
actress scarlett johansson looks as if she stepped right out of the past. her calm face is a painter's dream and her resemblance to the actual model for 'the girl with a pearl earring' is strong. she is perfectly suited to play a quiet witness to what's going on around her.
the excellent and seemingly serious colin firth donned a billowing white blouse and got to play vermeer. my fave, cillian murphy, played a small role.
this film is really very beautiful to behold.

totally totally agree! this film made me smell the concoctions and hear the clanging vividly during the mixing of the paints.....
i appreciate art, this film educated me to realize how light and its proximity at the right moment captures the essence expressed by the creator at that moment.
