one day in 2001 i was walking through nyc's east village and saw lots of posters for 'y tu mama tambien.' the posters were colorful with lots of great press printed alongside the names of people i'd never heard of, except one. the producer, ted hope, was someone who i already associated with quality films. that is why i went to see it.
this 'road movie' actually has more than just wheels in common with the hopper/fonda cult classic of the sixties. it is a story of two close friends who just take off. this time the setting is mexico. the actors, diego luna and gael garcia bernal, are pretty adorable and it is a joy to watch their sentimental education blossom in the hands of the somewhat older woman who makes up the triangle.
the scenes are beautiful. the laughter and tears mix you up till you don't really know what's what till the ending. actress maribel verdu's role is mysteriously confusing but seriously touching. this is a wonderful film that put the best friends/actors on the map.

this film has a jane rule element similar to the movie "desert hearts".
