the dreaded weekend

some artists receive the greatest accolades and then sort of slide. when john schlesinger's 'midnight cowboy' miraculously won best picture, i am sure many people wondered how he was gonna follow such a feat.
he had already bravely displayed the affection of one man for another. in his next film he pushed it further by choosing a story where two men are sexually involved. that was a first for a major motion picture. adapted from the novel, 'sunday, bloody sunday' he had a great and believable cast. glenda jackson, british actress par excellence, plays a woman in love. the plot thickens very soon as we learn her lover is also deeply involved with another man.
peter finch, of the blue blue eyes, played glenda's nightmare. murray head played the man in the middle. they were all perfect for their roles. it is a difficult scenario to deal with and schlesinger just knew what to do. this film won many awards.

glenda jackson is a rare bird. check out r. altman's theater bomb from the early 80's H.E.A.L.T.H. I lived in st. petersburg fl and was lucky enough to volunteer as an "extra" on the set filmed at the Don Cesar's Hotel on st. petersburg beach. my memory of ms. jackson was; aloof with her peers during the making of the movie but the sparkle glint of her eyes and prim smile soften the mood.
