are you on the game?

i wish i could type that question with an irish accent. as a fan of actress miranda richardson i really wanted to see 'the crying game' but was afraid of the violence. i told an irish friend and she simply said, 'go see it.' little did she know i would not stop seeing it for a long time.
during 1992, the years of it's release, i spoke of this film constantly. actor stephen rea eclipsed every other actor. jaye davidson's 'dil' eclipsed every other character. director neil jordan became the filmmaker of my dreams.
i have loved every neil jordan movie i have seen, but this is his masterpiece. among all the grief of a war torn country, this writer/director finds endless poetry. his novels, his plays, his films, all overflowing with unforgettable images.
the story of 'jimmy' meeting 'dil' is really what the film is all about. even though miranda, as a member of the ira, and forest whitaker as their hostage, are exceptional, it is rea and davidson that live on as two unique people who overcome whatever barriers their hearts and minds were bound by.
sexual identity takes a back seat in this tale of true love.

jimmy: are you happy now?
dil: delirious.

the crying game soundtrack was great but would of been greater if bowie's "Look Back In Anger" was included. :)
