by the 30's, john barrymore was already considered the greatest actor of his day. his personal life was well known and for him to be cast as an inebriate did not seem to bother him. in '20th century' we are treated to his nervous hands, his cunning ways, and not a drop is consumed. not on camera, anyway.
as oscar, a theatre producer on the skids, he will do anything to get a play produced. his creation, 'lily garland' has not only eclipsed his star but wants nothing to do with him. good luck.
barrymore is as charming and relentless as ever in getting her back. this is one of the funniest films i've ever seen. it shimmers with 30's black and white. carole lombard as 'lily' is absolutely timelessly beautiful. they shout and faint and kick and hug. irresistible times two in one terrific film.
