'i'm not to blame. we don't make our own hearts.' in 'camille', garbo offered these words as a way to soften her lover's heartbreak when she was leaving him. if only bette davis had been a fraction as thoughtful in this film version of 'of human bondage.' she simply deals the deadly blow by telling the man who took her in off the streets,' you make me sick.'
the sensitive young doctor who exchanges her gutter for a home is played by leslie howard, an actor who couldn't hide his sensitive nature if you put a gun in his hand.
bette davis is the best. in this movie her character is absolutely the worst. if only camille's words were not so true.
