hallelujah! a film where shelley winters is demure and wears saddle shoes. as factory girl 'alice tripp' she spends all day putting swimsuits in boxes only to have them look great on her boyfriends rich and beautiful dream girl.
elizabeth taylor as the dream girl is just too young to have to face the consequences of her involvement with alice's sweetheart. montgomery clift? he is so convincing as the opportunist that at one point the camera falls asleep on his face for a whole minute just so we can watch the machinations of his greedy mind.
everybody loses here. theodore dreiser, who wrote the novel, A PLACE IN THE SUN, likes when things happen that way. what a greatly acted sad story does is make you feel sorry for others. compassion is wonderful.
