'awhile ago somewhere i don't know when-i was watching a movie with a friend-i fell in love with the actress-she was playing a part that i could understand.' neil young wrote the song in 1971. he was singing about carrie snodgress, the astonishing actress from the 1970 film 'diary of a mad housewife.'
sue kaufman's novel which the film is based on is not only really good but it is really fun. whoever did the casting of the film gets a big round of applause. richard benjamin as husband 'jonathan' was infuriating. frank langella as the lover 'george' was all kinds of sexy and watching carrie as 'tina' you mentally wrapped your arms around her tiny frame in a hug.
anytime, anywhere, i can summon up the sound of jonathan screaming his wife's name from his sickbed of their swank nyc apartment and crack up.
