i cannot recall the good fortune which brought me to 'SUNDAYS AND CYBELE'. look at that child and tell me it doesn't give your heart pause.
in 1962 this timeless cinematic work of art won the academy award for best foreign film. as with many french films i love, the story is tender and simple. while waiting in the train station where his girlfriend catches the train for work, a young man, seriously shell shocked from his duty as a pilot during the vietnam war, observes a young girl arriving with her father. if not for the depths of her tears he might not have given the child a second glance. he follows them to an orphanage and watches from a distance as her father drops her off with promises of weekly visits then leaves before the nuns even open the gates to let her in. exit real father, enter 'pretend' father.
hardy kruger plays the pilot. patricia gozzi plays 'cybele.' it is the most touching film i have ever seen and very hard to find.
