alberto moravia is one of the best novelists in the world and, 'boredom' is one of my favorite books. in 1957 his novel 'la ciociara' was published. the book, set in wartime italy, involves a mother and daughter's flight from rome to the countryside where both mother and child are raped by soldiers and left to pick up the shattered pieces of their already uprooted lives. the powerful story was filmed in 1960 and released in the states under the title, TWO WOMEN.
sophia. sophia loren is difficult to describe. whatever adjective you use sounds like a contradiction of the one before. earthy, glamorous, intense, cheerful, experienced, refreshing. the ways in which she reawakens her daughter's sense of self are sublime.
