it ain't easy. trust me.

i feel as if i have been walking around with 'lolita' all my life. the novel is perfect. the kubrick film has enough brilliance to dim any thought of a remake. director adrian lyne did not agree. what i can point out are elements from the book that stanley chose to omit and adrian chose to include.
most importantly are lo's tears. the sadness of lolita is so well expressed in this 1997 version. the absence of lo's laugh rings as loudly in poor humbert's mind as the happy shouts in the schoolyard. jeremy irons' wife suggested he not do this movie but there you have it, he wanted to play humbert humbert.
for lovers of the book, you will get to see humbert's first heartbreak as a way of helping to understand his adult behavior, but, as blanche dubois, (tennessee williams' most beloved creation) remarked, 'some things are not forgivable.'

I think the remake in reality would be Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates relationship.
