'i shall never forget the weekend laura died.' that opening line is as quoted as her portrait was admired. until the actress gene tierney enters the picture the painting is all the actor dana andrews ever knows of her beauty. like others, he had fallen in love with an 'image.' otto preminger directed three films starring gene tierney but 'laura's' star hangs brightest in celluloid heaven. i came up with three reasons: great direction, endlessly quotable dialogue, and the lady herself. also, dana andrews who plays the the investigator of the murder is hardly small change.
what makes for a 'classic?' a film you go back to again and again and again.
