'nobody gives two fucks for bela' might be the funniest line i have ever heard in a film. aside from giving true pathos to the character of a deeply broken man, i have a feeling martin landau won an oscar for his portrayal of has-been bela lugosi simply from making us all fall out of our chairs with laughter, which is one of life's great experiences. getting drunk will do it but it ain't the same. with this film you'll need 'NO LIQUIDS!'
the instincts of johnny depp as an actor are unparalleled, from choice of project to execution. tim burton satisfied my soul by filming the seriously wacky life story of indie filmmaker ed wood in black and white. what a wonderful guy ed must have been. when his devoted crew suggest another take he looks at them like they are crazy. 'it was perfect!' classic.
when ed meets hero orson welles in a bar and orson refers to his masterpiece as 'cain' i fell off my chair again. aside from all that is great about this movie, the thing that wins my heart is the ENTHUSIASM of the lead character. thank you tim. as a bonus, bill murray is a riot.
