anthony burgess, the writer of 1962's 'clockwork orange', is only partially responsible. it was stanley kubrick in 1971 who filmed 'alex' taking the 'cure' with eye clips on his lids.
unforgettable images litter this stunner but the one that chills me to the bone is not so much scary to look at as terrifying to comprehend. as the 'ultra violent' hero (or as i refer to my dog, 'pscho tuna') of the dystopian tale stumbles blindly through his wrecked post cure existence he spies the first indication that perhaps all is not lost. up ahead is a small sign with only one word. HOME. obviously the lad had never heard the expression, 'you can never go home again.'
kubrick said he would not have made this film without malcolm mcdowell. their shared nightmare was a match made in heaven.
'singing in the rain' will NEVER sound the same.
