BARRYMORE

i love this man. i have done enough reading about his life to learn that he was the most beloved stage actor of his time as well as a serious disappointment to many who knew him. when he applies his make up (in some film roles quite a lot) and slips into character john barrymore is every kind of adorable. 

this film is based on the play written by elmer rice who was as popular in his day as o'neill. it is non stop great dialogue brought to life by a winning cast. though i have read that john and his brother lionel loved to steal scenes from one another, in 'counsellor at law' the guy is just so electric he lights up with room whether he is trying to or not. 

it is possible that he was drunk as a lord while making this picture but when his character rakes his hand (the most expressive hands ever) through his hair in despair i wish someone would give him a drink.  i love this man.
