although 'cincinnati kid' takes place in depression era new orleans, one close up of steve mcqueen could make you forget both time and place and i am sure his leading ladies forget a lot more than that. one delight to be had from this 1966 'gambling it all away' film has to do with just how dang darling this actor is.
the director understood it would be foolish not to surround the films ambitious poker player with beautiful women. when steve's character is not busy trying to be the right man for his sweetheart, played by tuesday weld, he's doing his best to steer clear of his important friend's gal, a woman who possesses a flame that will not go out. ann-margret once starred in a film called 'kitten with a whip' and in this film she purrs and tugs till she gets what she wants. it is an absolute joy to watch to watch her cut up puzzle pieces to make them fit.
