a study in monochrome

carole lombard channelling robert mapplethorpe.

wrap it up, i'll take it

when is a book jacket better than a book, a record sleeve better than the music, a poster better than the film? it happens.

la dolce vita

if you took a generous helping of grace, combined with generous pinches of peasant wisdom, and stirred it all with the crown of a countess to the strains of stephane grappelli, you would have nothing to eat! however, an eyeful of sophia loren kind of gives you the picture. leave the cooking to her! the italian film icon has two cookbooks that are chock full of simple mediterranean meals. this woman continues to look absolutely in the pink so i assume that she eats for health which is always a beautiful way to feast.

much as sophia has breathed her essence into the notion of worldly sophistication, it is her role in 'two women' that has left the loudest echo. the film, based on a moravia novel, is unglamorous, bleak, sad, and truly stunning.

In 1962, Loren won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Two Women, along with 21 awards, becoming the first actress to win an Academy Award for a non-English-speaking performance.

make believe

During the entire production of 'The Missouri Breaks' Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando were only on the set on the same day just one time, despite their multiple scenes together.

these guys were neighbors for years. it's as if they lived by that wise suggestion: don't let your sweetheart teach you to drive.

dropping out

each time i hear jim carroll's song, 'it's too late' i get as excited as the last time. it is infectious, rockin', and as profound as we know jim can be.
the fact that jim's books of poetry continue to stay in print is comforting. the man was a brilliant writer, a visionary, and left behind a legacy that continues to thrill.

his book 'the basketball diaries' was made into a film in 1995. lucky for us the movie was made during leo's 'pretty phase' which dicaprio claims he is happy to have outgrown. gowing up is the main theme of this slice of jim carroll's life. his transformation from athlete to a life seriously outside the lines of the basketball court is the stuff of legend.

'You're growing up. And rain sort of remains on the branches of a tree that will someday rule the Earth. And it's good that there is rain. It clears the month of your sorry rainbow expressions, and it clears the streets of the silent armies... so we can dance.'- jim carroll

photos: jim's speaking voice was very special, very shaky/telling it like it was for him/leo and mark wahlberg in the film version

what's up with leo

leonardo's next movie: Biopic on FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, focusing on his scandalous career and controversial private life as a homosexual and rumored cross dresser.

Director: Clint Eastwood
Writer: Dustin Lance Black
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer (the 'twins' from 'the social network') and Naomi Watts

border crossing

in the brilliant film of tennessee williams' play 'night of the iguana', defrocked priest richard burton gropes through his thankless task of driving tourists through mexico while helplessly trying to dissuade sue lyon from her 'won't take no for an answer' intimations that as soon as the tour is over she will introduce him to her dad who will set him up in a church of his own. despite her attempts to lure him across state lines he tells her that the only border he's crossing is the border of sanity.

on this cold as all heck northeast winter night it doesn't hurt to imagine the shoe on the other foot.
