teenage wasteland

of the three james dean films that have cemented the actor as the dreamy upstart, 'east of eden' is the one i believe to be the most relaxing experience. all three of the directors who worked with dean were giants, but it was elia kazan's ability to bring a realness to the screen that so beautifully captured the confusion and desire of the young man who is the single greatest standard for discontented youth.

'cal trask' aside, james and natalie, who each played out the disappointments and struggles of teens at war with home life, were so lovely together in 'rebel without a cause.'
