take a bow

tennessee williams' play 'a streetcar named desire' opened on broadway in 1947. even though every aspect of the production screamed success, everyone involved must have been crossing their fingers as the playwright was surely bringing a heavy dose of poetry, brutality, and sexual tension into the lives of three people under one roof. the genius of tennessee knew to weave charm and insight into the play and his hit ran two years. director kazan then took his baby from stage to screen. the only change in the line-up was the actress playing 'blanche.' thank you jessica tandy and hello vivien leigh. i only know vivien in the role. in my mind she owns it.

however, it is really interesting to see these stills from the original ny stage production.
