nothing lasts forever. novelist vladimir nabokov communicated this very well. all the main characters in 'lolita' die before attaining the wisdom that hopefully comes with old age. charlotte gets run over. clare quilty is shot by humbert. humbert has a fatal coronary in prison. dolores fades from view during childbirth.
maybe nabokov was simply too cynical to think butterflies were owed their short lifespan. it is a truth about the author's life i do not approve of.
