when neil young reuses his own melodies i think it is strange but i don't think it is a sin. the fact that novelist peter hedges wrote the screenplay adapted from his 1991 novel 'what's eating gilbert grape' makes the hollywood ending less painful than if someone else wrote it. then again, i feel pretty sure that the pressure was on for gilbert and arnie to escape 'endora' before the curtain fell. it really is too disheartening to think of those wonderful individuals stuck there, which is how the book ended.
